You're Spending Extra Money on 'Convenience Foods'

Would you pay someone $75 dollars an hour to slice apples or $160 dollars to shred cheese? Somehow I doubt it, but, according to Bankrate .com, that’s exactly what you’re doing when you buy what are known as ‘convenience foods’. To prove the point, a study sponsored by the Arizona Republic had student researchers purchase both raw ingredients and prepared foods. They compared the extra cost of ready-to-eat foods - like shredded cheese to the time it took to make the same thing from the raw ingredients - a block of cheese.

They discovered a pound of shredded cheddar costs about $10 dollars. But a block of cheddar cheese costs $6 dollars and takes about one and a half minutes to grate by hand. That would mean you’re paying the equivalent of four dollars for one and a half minutes of work. or $160 dollars an hour. Some of the other pricey items were sliced celery at $49 an hour, bagged lettuce, $14 an hour, and cheese sticks at $43 and hour. The testers found pre-packaged meat and cheese lunches took less than three minutes to prepare from scratch. Their savings? About $20 dollars an hour!

Now, in fairness to convenience foods, the researchers did not figure into their calculations the time it took to buy the raw ingredients or the clean up time. So you do the math and see what works for you. And it's up to you to decide, "do you get what you pay for?"
