Anyplace, Anytime Exercise

What’s your excuse?
“I don’t have time to exercise. I’m working 60 hours a week trying to run a company.”
“I can’t seem to squeeze it in. Between taxiing the kids all over town and trying to run a household, there isn’t any time left for me.”
“My schedule is crazy. I travel all the time and never seem to have time to get to the gym. Then when I’m home, family demands and projects have me swamped.”

A common misconception with regard to exercise is the idea that you have to carve out 30-60 continuous minutes of fitness a day, or it does you no good. In fact, according to the 1996 Surgeon General’s Report, exercise is just as beneficial when short bursts of physical activity, 5-10 minutes here and there, are accumulated throughout the day, adding up to about 30 minutes total. The idea here is that you can make time for exercise when you squeeze it in, in small bursts throughout the day, usually when you’re busy doing something else. In every corner of your life, there are hidden exercises waiting to be found. Remember “Where’s Waldo?” Well, think of this as “Where’s Fitness?”

The answer? It’s sometimes right in front of you. Below are exercise opportunities that you’ll discover in everyday life. See how many times during the day you’re able to sneak fitness in:

At the Office
Keeping it moving.
Instead of emailing a colleague, deliver your thoughts live – walk to her office or cubicle and have a live chat.
Instead of taking the elevator to your office, try taking the stairs. What, you say all the way to the 20th floor? Maybe take the elevator halfway then switch to the stairs.
Instead of a sit-down meeting, have a walking meeting – especially outside if the weather is nice. Then you’ll cash in on the added benefit of the vitamin D boost with the sunshine.
Desk exercises. Stuck sitting in front of your computer for long periods? “Reboot” your body with a few simple movements:
Leg kicks/extensions
Toe points/flexes
Bend overs and side bends
Arm circles
Shoulder shrugs
Chair squats

Phone It In
Pace yourself. Instead of sitting while talking on the phone, walk-and-talk.
Speakerphone/headsets. Get that phone call in while you’re on the treadmill or bike. Or do your crunches, squats and stretches while catching up on the latest gossip.

At Home
Dancing With the Chores. Burn the calories to your favorite tunes as you clean, cook, and launder.
Laundry Brigade. Turn your laundry basket into a medicine ball, lifting, squatting and swinging it to burn off extra calories. Get your steps in by making extra trips up and down the stairs.
Bag the Workouts. A plethora of fitness opportunities await you at the grocery store. Park further away if it’s safe. Go up and down all the aisles, even if you don’t have to. Use the weight of “jumbo” sized items to your advantage – cases of water, soda and dog food can be used for squats. When unloading your groceries, make extra trips to get your steps in. Use your grocery bags for arm curls and shoulder raises before you unpack them.
Cleaning Calisthenics. Cleaning isn’t for wimps. Chores such as mopping, vacuuming, shoveling, mowing, sweeping and scrubbing are all workouts in and of themselves.

On the Road
If you’re in an airplane or in a car for long periods, take active rest breaks.
Check out the hotel gym.
Explore the hotel and the surrounding area on foot.
Take the stairs whenever possible.
Walk to dinner and meetings whenever possible.
Take a swim.

“Waiting” It Down
Whether waiting for a table or for your dentist, check on your wait time and try to take a quick spin around the block if you’d otherwise just be sitting for 10 minutes.
While waiting for a delayed flight, do your stretches on the floor. Use the wall for wall-sits and wall-pushups. Explore the terminal on foot.
Practice meditation and deep breathing if waiting for an appointment.

Family Time – Active Time
Soccer moms. After dropping the kids off at practice, walk around the field instead of sitting in the car or on the sidelines.
Child’s choice. Let each family member choose a physical activity for the week that he or she will lead.
Get outdoors with your family. Do something active instead of watching TV. Play a ballgame, ride bikes or hike together.
Stroller workout. Turn a walk in the park into a walking workout complete with lunges, squats, and stroller jogging.

So, where’s fitness? It’s Anyplace – Anytime – and waiting for an excuse to work out with you!


For those who have sons and those who are happy they don't

 
 

And you also find out interesting  things when you have sons. Like:

  1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4  inches deep.
  2. If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller  blades, they can ignite.
  3. A 3-year old boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded  restaurant.
  4. If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough  to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It  is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all  four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.
  5. You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a  ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you  get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a
    long  way.
  6. The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a  ceiling fan.
  7.  When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh", it's already too  late.
  8. Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it.
  9. A six-year old  Boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old Man says  they can only do it in the movies.
  10. Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old  Boy.
  11. Play dough  and microwave should not be used in the same  sentence.
  12. Super glue is  forever.
  13. No matter how  much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on  water.
  14. Pool filters  do not like Jell-O.
  15. VCR's do not  eject "PB & J" sandwiches even though TV commercials show they  do.
  16. Garbage bags  do not make good parachutes.
  17. Marbles in  gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.
  18. You probably  DO NOT want to know what that odor is.
  19. Always look  in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like  ovens.
  20. The fire  department in Austin,  TX has a 5-minute response  time.
  21. The spin  cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.
  22. It will,  however, make cats dizzy.
  23. Cats throw up  twice their body weight when dizzy.
  24. 80% of women  will pass this on to almost all of their friends, with or without  kids.
  25. 80% of men  who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid.

Coach Stacy: Pura Vida

Get healthy from the inside out!

Pura Vida.  Translated it means "pure health."  Get a start on "pure health" in 2006.

As a personal trainer, I'm always looking for avenues toward health for my clients.  It's not just about rock-hard abs or tight buts.  It's about achieving wellness from the inside out.  The two most frequently requested "fixes" my clients seek are weight loss and younger looks.  Two simple solutions are cod liver oil and coconut oil, both of which you can find at Health Food grocers such as Whole Foods.

Now, I heard you say "yuck - are you insane?"

Your parents and grandparents have told you stories having taken cod liver oil.  And yes, it was somewhat "yucky" back then.  But today's remedy goes down like "a spoon full of sugar," as Mary Poppins would say.  As for coconut oil, well, did you know that the coconut is known as the tree of life?


Cod Liver Oil

The benefits are enormous.  The American diet is generally insufficient in Omega 3 - a fat that is essential to good health.  On the other hand, our intake of Omega 6 (found in other oils) is too high, throwing us off balance.  By taking both cod liver and fish oil (both sources of Omega 3s) you can prevent disease and live longer.  Both have been found to help fight:

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Alzheimer's Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Ulcers
  • ADHD
  • Weight Gain

Other benefits of Omega 3s include:

  • improved brain function
  • increased energy levels
  • greater resistance to common colds and flu
  • skin, hair and nails
  • improved sleep

The main difference between cod liver oil and fish oil is that cod liver is high in Vitamin D (the sunshine Vitamin).  So it's recommended that you take fish oil in the warm weather months when you have more sun exposure, and switch to cod liver oil in the cold weather months.

One of my clients asked, "Why not just eat fish?"  Certain varieties of fish have been tested as showing dangerously high levels of mercury and other toxins.  And some people simply don't like the taste of fish.  Sound fishy?  Do some research - you'll be surprised.

The recommended dose of cod liver or fish oil - and the brand I recommend - is one teaspoon for every 50 pounds of body weight of Carlson's Liquid.  If the liquid form turns you off, try Carlson's Softgels - one Softgel for every 10 pounds of body weight, up to 15 pills per day.

Coconut Oil

In the 1940s farmers tried using coconut oil to fatten their animals but discovered that it made the critters lean and active and actually increased their appetites.  Sound like a good weight loss remedy to you?

So why has coconut oil gotten such a bad rap?  It's simple.  Coconut oil is a saturated fat that liquefies at 76°.  In the last two decades saturated fats, which have been linked to high cholesterol and heart disease, have been widely campaigned against by doctors and nutritionists.  However, most of the "problem" foods today - chips, dressings, candies, ice creams, etc. - contain polyunsaturated or partially hydrogenated fats and they top the charts as causes of obesity. 

The elimination of coconut oil from diets also had to do with propaganda from the seed-oil industry and trade regulations - not actual harmfulness to diets.  Again, do your research.  People who have diets rich in coconut oil have been known to have decreased incidents of:

  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Colon problems
  • High Cholesterol
  • Thyroid problems
  • Senility
  • Obesity
  • Premature death
  • Insulin insensitivity
  • Skin problems
  • Weight gain

The coconut oil definitely tastes better than the fish oils, too!  Consult with a representative from your local Health Food grocer for recommended dosages. 

As always, you should check with your physician before adding these oils to your diet, especially if you are taking medications.

Five Ways to Keep Weight Off During the Holidays

Aside from crash dieting or painful deprivation, many holiday revelers don't feel very confident that they can keep the pounds from piling on this holiday season.  Fortunately, drastic measures can be tossed aside if you follow five basic "rules" to minimize any potential damage, providing you start today.
  • Confine your eating to a specific place (kitchen or dining room table) when you're not at a holiday party. (That means eat only at your designated place - no eating while watchingTV, driving, studying or working on the computer!)
  • Choose a small plate and make an agreement with yourself that you are only going to eat what you can fit on the plate.
  • Set a limit (before you arrive!) for the number of drinks (other than water) that you'll consume during an event.  In addition to preventing alcohol related accidents, you'll cut calories.  Both alcoholic drinks and holiday drinks like eggnog are high in calories
  • E A T  S L O W L Y!!!  "Bite frequency" is strongly related to the total number of calories one consumes in a sitting.  Do whatever you can to slow yourself down. Between bites you can: sip water, put down your fork, count to ten, - be creative.  Allow your brain to realize when you're full. Eating quickly often enables us to eat more than necessary because we don't yet feel satiated!
  • Eat small bites!  Bite size is also related to calories consumed. Smaller bites will lead to a smaller calorie intake over the course of a meal.

They're delightful. They're delicious. They're dangerous.
What am I talking about?  Why the buffets, of course - and the accompanying weight gain that most of us experience by the end of the holiday season.  Come to think of it, this may be the reason layering was invented - so you wouldn't have to tuck anything in. 

So here are some tips to keep that Santa Jelly Belly of fat from taking over your waistline:

  • If you're anticipating "stuffing your face" at a weekend party, try stuffing in your workouts during the week.  Every step counts for burning those calories.  You should aim for at least 10,000 steps (or about 5 miles) per day.
  • After the "Big Meal," plan to go for a walk or run - or engage in some other form of cardio. Build a snowman - or, better yet, have a fun snowball fight!
  • Beware of the office munchies -- the cookies, the cake and the candy. If you try one of each, you have taken in an extra 350 calories.
  • Beware of your kids' Holiday programs.  Especially watch out for the punch.  One cup is a whopping 82 calories!  A handful of nuts -- 166 calories.  A half of a sugar cookie -- 50 calories! Popcorn that's light if it's not caramel, 130 kcal, ½ cup!
  • Don't go to parties on an empty stomach.  Eat a little before you go so you're not so tempted with the high calorie party goodies.
  • Liquid calories do count and they can add up quickly before you know it. One cup of eggnog is 343 calories and 19 grams of fat -- 11 grams of saturated fat!
  • Pace yourself - don't race through your food.  It takes 20 minutes for the brain to signal the stomach that you're full.  Remember, if it's a buffet, you can always go back for more. Eating off others plates well that goes to your calories count!
  • Survey the spread before digging in.  Strategize your "attack."
  • If you're on the "holiday party trail," attending 2 or 3 festivities in one evening, try indulging only in appetizers at the first event, a main course at the second event and desert at the last stop.
  • Don't socialize with the food.  Mingle with the other guests.
  • Fill up on fruits and veggies first, so you're not tempted to overindulge in the less healthy choices.  These foods are high in fiber and make you feel full faster.
  • If you're involved in food preparation, look into ways you can substitute healthier ingredients without sacrificing taste.  For example, substitute low-fat milk or cheese for whole milk or cheese.
  • Quality Control is a nice way of saying "I'll just take a little taste to see if it is good!"  Remember, broken cookies have the same number of calories as those intact! One single misshapen cookie counts for 156 calories!  And have your kids lick the spoon!
  • Watch your alcohol consumption.  Becoming tipsy stimulates your appetite.  Try substituting lower calorie beverages such as wine coolers and diet sodas in your mixed drinks.  And of course, light beer has fewer calories than regular beer. Also, try drinking plain old water between alcoholic beverages.  This will help keep you hydrated and keeps inebriation in check.
  • Think about your eating and don't consume unconsciously.  Ask yourself, "Am I really hungry, or am I bored, nervous, or depressed?"  Eat because you're hungry.
  • If you're the host, give the leftovers away so you're not tempted to indulge later.

Follow these simple tips to avoid that snug in the pants feel so common after the first of the year.  Happy and Healthy Holidays to all!

Ten Time- and Money-Saving Kitchen Cleaning Tipsby Monica ResingerHere are ten money and time saving tips to help you in your kitchen.
1. Use those leftover slivers of soap to cut expenses! Cut a small pocket in a sponge and place small slivers of leftover soap into it for a sudsy washing sponge.

2. Hold a scouring pad underneath a sponge when scrubbing. This will give you a better grip and protect your hands.

3. Save time on the dinner dishes. Before serving dinner, run a sink full of very hot soapy water. When everyone is finished eating dinner, tell them to wash and rinse their own plate.

4. Use a paint scraper or putty knife to remove baked on or cemented goo from stovetops, countertops or floors.5. Use a toothbrush to scrub hard to reach surfaces such as behind and on faucets.6. Baking soda makes an excellent scouring powder.

7. By keeping a spoon rest on the stove, you'll avoid a lot of messy clean-ups.

8. Place sticky (honey, syrup, molasses and oil) containers on plastic lids in the cupboard or fridge to avoid sticky messes.

9. To get odors out of plastic containers, place crumpled newspaper inside the container and seal it overnight.

10. Keep a fillable wand near the kitchen sink and when you have a few spare minutes, wash a few dishes with the wand. This may help you cut down on doing full loads of dishes.

Exercise Fit Bithere are lots of fun ways to be physically active and healthy. How many times can you jump rope without missing? Make your own obstacle course or field day in your back yard or basement. Make up a dance routine. How long can you pogo? How many steps do you walk in one day? Play tag – you’re it – GET FIT!

Every day your body needs food as fuel. Food has calories. Activity burns calories. So, the more active you are, the more calories you need. The harder you play, the more calories you use. Do It At Home Facial

We all love getting pampered, but sometimes it's a little pricey. According to beautyriot.com, we can get the same benefit by doing this simple process.
1) Wash face with a mild soap or cleanser and exfoliate with a gentle grain scrub.

2) Bring to boil a large pot of water. To make your facial a little more relaxing, add lavender, rosemary, chamomile or eucalyptus and cover.

3) Turn off the heat and let stand for 5-10 minutes. Using a towel to cover your head, hold your face over the pot-about 10 inches from the pot so as not to burn your skin-and stay for 5-10 minutes. The smaller your pores the less time you need in the steam. The steam will soften pores and make it easier to extract dirt and oil.

4) Wipe face with a clean, warm washcloth.

5) If skin is oily, apply a clay or mud mask and follow directions. Typical drying time is 5-10 minutes. Fordry skin, apply a moisturizing mask. For combination skin, such as an oily t-zone (forehead and nose) and dry face, apply the moisturizing mask to dry areas and the clay or mud mask to oily areas.

6) Rinse with cold water to reduce pores.

7) Moisturize with a light facial lotion.

Great Hair Mask
I tried this over the weekend and LOVED it! Take a teaspoon of avocado, teaspoon of OliveOil, teaspoon of Aloe Vera, and a teaspoon of honey. Mix together, put on your dry hair, cover with Saran Wrap for 15-30minutes and wash out. Left my hair shiny and soft. You could use a blow dryer to heat it up after putting the Saran Wrap on. Have fun!
